A lot of people have listened to the fable of the $500 website. The fable goes a little like this, you cough up $500, and someone will build you a fully functional absolutely gorgeous website that will bring in customers by the thousands. This is, frankly, bull. What you get for $500 is a static website with very little in the way of mobile functionality, graphics, easy navigation, intuitive response, much less graphics and features. What you get, is what you’ve paid for. There are five elements of good web design that you absolutely can’t ignore, no matter what you are paying a web designer.
5 Elements of Good Web Design
1. Mobile-friendly or responsive. With 77 percent of Americans owning smart phones, and a significant number of those dependent on them, using mobile friendly design should be a complete no-brainer. You need to think with your finger and thumb when you are designing for people who use smart phones or tablets.
2. Background videos and banners. Background videos and scrolling banners at a lot of visual interest to what would otherwise be plain white space. They engage the eye and draw the user to content. Background videos don’t need to take up a lot of bandwidth, or take a lot of time to load. Likewise scrolling banner of three to four different images keeps the user engaged with the products or services that you are advertising, and those images can even include a coupon or promotional code.
3. Web-safe typography. Web safe fonts look the same no matter what browser are operating system people are using to view them. All those really cool fonts that you’d like to use in your email blast? Some of them might not even work. You’re not limited though, there are a number of fonts such as Arial, Tahoma, Trebuchet, Verdana, Courier, Georgia, and Times New Roman that look the same across a wide variety of platforms.
4. Clear navigation. Your navigation buttons should be easy to identify and operate with a tap. Keep it simple, without complicated graphics and using clear text. If you are designing for a Western audience keep navigation and action buttons on the left-hand side of the page and allow people to work from left to right as they have become accustomed to doing.
5. Informational footer. Just because it’s at the bottom of the page doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve the same attention as the rest of the page. Keep the design the same as the rest of the page, but pack it with links to the rest of your site, basic contact information, buttons to your social media presences, and even some interesting graphics.
